Grandma Plays Golf Zero – Gamer Grandma

It’s a 90 year old Japanese woman who has recently become sort of popular.  I guess.  She has 472,000 subscribers but these videos don’t get an enormous amount of views.

I watched a couple of her videos before this one.  One was a third person samurai game.  You go around killing people with your sword.  She doesn’t say anything interesting.  She just keeps saying, “Oh, I have to go over here.”  Stuff like this.  But the gameplay was competent.

I also saw a video where she plays Fall Guys.  Same basic commentary.  “I need to go over here now” or “Oh, I failed.”  But again, the gameplay was okay.

So this is Golf Zero.  She never played it before.  I think that’s largely the case for all of these videos.

But she starts to figure it out at about the three minute mark.

This video has English subtitles, by the way.  Her newer videos all seem to have subtitles.  You have to turn them on.  She started using English titles for her videos about seven months ago, presumably when her popularity started taking off.

Anyway, that’s basically the video.  She plays games, semi-competently especially considering her age, and the commentary is basically non-existent.  Mercifully, these are short videos.  I suspect that there’s somebody behind these videos.

Apparently, she’s been playing games since the early 1980s.  Why doesn’t she play games that she’s actually familiar with?   In a lot of these videos, it’s just her saying, “I don’t know what I’m doing.”

I don’t know.  Is she on Instagram?  Maybe there are some “sexy” pictures of her.

No.  No Twitter either, apparently.

– “I dont care if his korean or japanese or whatever im f*cking subscribing because she deserves it!”

I think that’s a reference to anti-Korean sentiments in Japan.  There are people who were born and raised in Japan but they had Korean ancestors so they consider themselves to be Korean.  Similar to how people in the UK will refer to themselves as “Irish” because their grandparents or whoever were Irish.  Even though they themselves have never even been to Ireland.

So anyway, maybe she’s one of these Korean Japanese people.  There’s a name for it.  I think that Rikidozan was such a person.

If she’d play games that she was actually familiar with, maybe the commentary would improve because she wouldn’t have to concentrate so much.  Let’s hear some *nostalgia* for the 1940s.  Flip through a Takashimaya catalogue from 1938.

Actually, I doubt that such catalogues exist.  I think that Sears was the first company that produced catalogues.  It started off as just a mail order company.  When was their first catalogue?  Let me check…

Wow, 1887.  Maybe there was a Takashimaya catalogue in 1938 then.

Anyway, pretty boring.  I have to be honest.  But the gameplay is leagues better than anything that Erin is capable of.
