The Legend of Zelda (NES) – Erin Plays

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U6XZ7nxX7A

My first console as a kid was the SNES, and even after diving deep into NES games as an adult I still somehow always passed this game up. So it’s finally time to play The Legend of Zelda on NES!

That’s from the description.  How deep a dive must this have been?  I never had a Nintendo and I’ve played Legend of Zelda.  On an emulator.  Twenty five years ago.  Briefly, but in Erin’s world, that counts.

So let’s get through…this 43 minute video.  I don’t even know what Erin’s videos are supposed to be.  Are these reviews?  I don’t think so.  Are they playthroughs?  Maybe?  Bad playthroughs.  Are they first impression videos?  I guess that would be the most accurate description.  Is that even a genre?  Are people making videos where they play a game for the first and last time ever?  Why would anybody watch that?Whatever.  We have a lot of ground to cover.

0:00 – Oh.  A Daria shirt.  Remember Daria?  “The 90s!”  Erin is so *nostalgic* for Daria.  Even though I’m quite certain that she’s never watched the program.  She’ll do it for a Youtube video, though.  As a 31 year old woman.  For money.

“Hey guys!  Today we’re going to be playing Legend of Zelda for the NES.  Because why not?”

She’s just oozing with charisma.

Then it’s straight to the action.  “So we’re going to go in here.  Hehe.  Little step sounds.”

Now she’s commenting on cute SOUNDS.

Oh my god.  Then she questions why a wood sword would shoot.

This is a question that I grappled with as a child.  It wasn’t Zelda.  Oh.  Final Fantasy Adventure.  I too thought it was stupid that the character would shoot swords.  But whatever.  It’s something that people have accepted decades ago.  Or at least in their childhood.  But because she’s completely unfamiliar with video games, this is all new to her.

0:45 – “I always thought that these little things looked like Jello moulds.”

Oh.  “X looks like Y”.  Thank you for that observation.  And what exactly do you mean by “always” for a game that you’ve never played before?

Oh this is brutal.  She makes stupid jokes and then there’s a quick edit to somewhere else.  At least give us a moment to regain our composure after doubling over in laughter.

1:15 – She likes the cute skeletons.

1:45 – She references two of the three games that she played as a child: Mario All-Stars and Return of Arcade.

2:00 – “When I first got Link to the Past I was like, ‘Oh my god.  What?  What do I do?”

When exactly was this?  She said that she’s never played the game before.  So is she talking about ten minutes ago?

3:00 – Shit tier gameplay.  And this edited.

Okay, so I’m at the ten minute mark.  She hasn’t been saying anything noteworthy but this is just bad.  She’s playing a game that takes hours to play, and it seems that she actually is playing the game for hours, but then she edits it all down to 45 minutes.  This would have been better as a stream.  Still complete shit but better.  Relatively speaking.

It’s just random screens.  And she’s lost.  And she dies a lot.  So it’s just bad.

15:15 – Certain ground looks like movie theatre carpet from “the 90s”.  Great.

I just realised something.  I’m about ten years older than Erin so this is an easy comparison.  I lived through the 1980s for the same ages as Erin has lived through “the 90s”.  So what do I remember about the 1980s?  NOTHING!  I wasn’t fucking doing anything.  I was like 11 years old in 1989.  I remember going to school and I remember watching Webster.  That’s it.

It’s not like I was hanging out with my friends at the movie theatre.  I wasn’t listening to music.  I was too young.

“The 90s” are the decade that I’m most *nostalgic* for.  If I had to choose a decade to be *nostalgic* about.  Most of the music that I listen to is from “the 90s”.  Most of the tv shows that I like are from “the 90s”.  A lot of the films that I like are from “the 90s”.  That’s the era when I was a teenager so that’s the era when I was most consuming popular culture.

Erin should be *nostalgic* for the 2000s.  She’s too young to be *nostalgic* for “the 90s”.  And musically, that seems to largely be the case.  Britney Spears and the Spice Girls and whatnot.

17:45 – She finds blue Link to be cute.

18:45 – “X looks like Y”

19:15 – She starts laughing for no reason.

21:45 – “X looks like Y”

23:15 – Erin talks about how she spilled coffee on her Daria shirt so had to change.

27:45 – Cute enemies

31:30 – “X looks like Y.”

34:30 – Some dumb Disneyland reference.

39:30 – “This is so stressful.”

40:15 – Cute enemies

40:30 – “So I just realised why Link is on this mission.  All of these guys are annoying and somebody needs to stop them.”

Oh.  Some of that “female comedy” that everybody enjoys.  Her “joke” doesn’t even make sense but let’s just move on.  This is almost over.

42:30 – It’s over.  Thank god.

“Maybe I’ll come back for a part 2.”

Oh please no.

Okay.  Well…it wasn’t too bad.  I wasted at least an hour of my life but it’s over now.  On to the comments.

– “lol nice to watch this type of video, a guy like me who can have issues making it to your stream ( work ) its nice to have one i can pause and get back to. Thanks for making this”

Poor bastard doesn’t know about Erin Plays Extras.

– “zelda is beautiful but you are more, good job!”

I would like to know if this pick up line has ever worked on anyone.  “You’re more beautiful than Zelda!”  I don’t recommend trying.

– “you suck at this game so bad it’s painful to watch”

– “That Daria tee is so rad! (90s(“

I think that this guy comments a lot with “rad”.  I really don’t think that this is a “the 90s” thing.  It’s from the 1980s.  And nobody said it in real life.

– “And I thought I was a lousy player … I even beat this with a freakin keyboard.”

I don’t know why people shit on playing games on keyboards.

– “our voluntary wallmaster ride to the beginning of Level 1 😱 Those things always gave me the creeps when I was a kid.”

That boring as fuck comment was from boring as fuck Hungry Goriya.  But it’s the only comment that Erin has replied to thus far.  Interesting.

– “Which Zelda game you like best, this or others?”

Well, she played fucking two of them.  For Youtube videos or on stream, for money.

Erin replies with, “I enjoyed this, but I think I like Zelda II better. Never beat it though.”

You know what she should have said?  “Well, I only played two of them, and it was just for Youtube videos or on stream, for money so my opinion doesn’t matter.”  I would have appreciated the honesty.

– “I wish Erin would heart my comment, said hi and gave me a rose.”

I’m pleased to report that that loser’s comment did not get hearted.

  1. “I've never played this before” but knows exactly what trees to burn, what rocks to push, or what walls to bomb. She tries to act like she accidentally discovered this stuff, but you can just tell she got help somewhere before the video. Maybe she studied one of Mike's videos. She's caught in the middle of trying to seem knowledgeable and trying to act like she doesn't know what she's doing at the same time.

  2. I noticed that as well. I assumed that it was massive trial and error but other times she would say, “Ha! I got it on my first try!” which sounds really implausible. So yeah, I suspect that she had help, whether it was some kind of guide or Mike telling her what to do.
